Occupational Health and Safety Training for Veterinary Faculty Students

The Occupational Health and Safety Coordinatorship at Balıkesir University (BAÜN) organized a comprehensive Basic Occupational Health and Safety Training for Veterinary Faculty students, taking into account occupational risks.

The training, aimed at raising awareness of safe working practices in the field of Veterinary Medicine, which involves unique risks such as working with animals, laboratory conditions, and field applications, was conducted with a large participation in the faculty lecture hall.

The training was presented and informed by Assistant Coordinator and Occupational Safety Specialist Dilara ÖZESMER and Workplace Physician Dr.  Lecturer  Member Neşe İNAL.

In their presentation, experts focused particularly on the following risk categories that Veterinary Faculty students may encounter:

Biological Risks: Zoonotic diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans and methods of prevention from these diseases.

Physical Risks: Injuries resulting from animal movements, use of sharp/pointed tools, and ergonomic working principles. 

Chemical Risks: Safe storage and use of disinfectants, medications, and chemical substances used in laboratories and clinics.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Use: Proper selection and use of PPE such as gowns, masks, and gloves.

Assistant Coordinator Dilara ÖZESMER stated that the aim of the training is not only to fulfill legal obligations but also to instill a preventive safety culture in students before graduation. Occupational Physician Dr. Lecturer Member Neşe İNAL, on the other hand, drew attention to the importance of protection against zoonotic diseases and vaccination, emphasizing students' responsibility to protect both their own health and that of those around them. 

With these special training programs, Balıkesir University aims to provide a safe learning and working environment in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, as in all its other units, and to ensure that its graduates are fully equipped to handle professional risks.
